Environmental Benefits of Conserved Land

Environmental Benefits

"Having lived here for 3/4 of a century, I'm delighted that the farm will stay like this. It's worked out extremely well for my family because we were able to achieve our dream of having the land stay as a farm, and we have the assurance that our dreams are going to carry on and on." (Malcolm Crooks in "Love of the Land" video).

Flooding: Climate change is causing more frequent and severe storms in Solebury. Conserved forests and wetlands absorb storm water, thereby reducing expensive, destructive and life-threatening flooding.

Rising Temperatures: Conserved land provides relief from rising temperatures. Green spaces are cooler than developed areas.

Habitat Loss: Climate change brings habitat change, forcing many species to move to new territories or alter migratory patterns. Conserved land preserves habitats and provides possible new habitats and migratory patterns.

Carbon Sequestration: Conserved land contributes to reducing carbon in the atmosphere. It prevents carbon producing development and sequesters more carbon each year in soils and plant life. Further refinements in conservation practices will provide greater carbon sequestration benefits.
