Solebury Police Establish K9 Unit

K-9 Blitz is a two-year-old Belgian Malinois trained by Penn Vet Working Dog Center. His handler is Officer Brendan Murphy. The Solebury Township Police K-9 Unit was established in 2019 with donations from local businesses and Solebury Township residents as well as other community members. From the initial donations, K-9 Blitz was purchased and paired with Officer Matthew Rice. The pair are attending extensive training at the Penn Vet Working Dog Center until late December 2019.

K-9 Blitz will be in service in early 2020.  Both he and his handler will continue with on-going training in basic obedience, detection, tracking (finding a person by scent), apprehension of suspects and evidence finding. Officer protection is also a component of the on-going training.

K-9 Blitz and Officer Rice will respond to all types of calls, including burglaries, missing persons, narcotic searches and traffic stops as well as track suspects who have fled from a crime scene on foot.

In addition to their field duties, K-9 teams are routinely requested for demonstrations at community meetings, safety fairs, school events, and various types of community gatherings.  This builds community support and the interaction necessary for a good relationship.

The K-9 Unit is supported by generous donations from groups, businesses and residents who have been very supportive, and donated the resources for the purchase and maintenance of the Department’s K-9.

Solebury Township Police Department is grateful for the support and strives to ensure that the  K-9 detail will fulfill its commitment in a way that serves the entire community.
