Sustainable Solebury

The word “sustainable” is not new. But in recent years it has taken on a critical new role for the environment. In environmental terms, sustainability refers to an action that can be continued indefinitely with little, or manageable, impact on the environment.

• Carefully managed, it is believed that power generation from wind and solar is sustainable — at least as long as the sun shines or the wind blows. Power generation from fossil fuels is not sustainable; the world’s supply of oil and gas is very finite.
• Carefully managed, it is believed that reasonable use of wood and paper products is sustainable — if the growth of new forest meets or exceeds demand. Continued creation of single-use plastic is not sustainable; again, because of the limited supply of petroleum resources and the impact of waste on the oceans and water resources.

Solebury, along with the rest of the world, needs to do our part to create a more sustainable world.

Sustainable Communities Certification

The Pennsylvania Sustainable Communities Certification is awarded to communities implementing sustainability related policies and practices. There are 5 possible levels of certification, each having separate point and validation requirements. Points are awarded based on 129 criteria separated into 9 categories (see below).

Out of a possible 300 points, Solebury Township earned a score of 206 and qualified for a platinum level certification. As of December 2020, Solebury Township is one of only eight municipalities in the entire state to have achieved such a high recognition for its implementation of sustainability policies and practices.
